The WPA field opened in 1938 and was home to several teams: Tyler Trojans, East Texas League (1938-40, 1946, 1949-50), Lone Star League (1947-48); Tyler East Texans (1951-53), Tigers (1954-55), Big State League. It then didn't see a lot of action until the Tyler Wildcatters of the Texas-Louisiana League called it home from 1994-97. It was most recently used by the Tyler Roughnecks of the All-American Association in 2001 and now apparently it's mostly used by the local Tyler Junior College Apaches and amateur teams. The stadium was renovated in 1990 and seats 4,000.
The field was locked up pretty tight, except there was a gap in the chain-link gate on the right field side near the equipment shed. There was just enough room to slide through, and I really wanted to see the inside bad, we came all that way. So I left my wife in the car, grabbed my camera and wriggled my way in. As I did so I apparently set off a motion detector because I heard a buzzer sound coming from the shed. Frantic, I was only able to get the one interior shot before I scurried out of there, ran to the car and got out sight before the cops came. We laughed.......The Angels In Orderhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18266787671936519341noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6419399734234473808.post-9260828850395571302014-08-22T19:40:00.001-07:002014-08-22T19:40:24.118-07:00Angelina College Roadrunner Baseball Field

There was also no way to get my car close enough to the walls so that I could stand on it to peek over the walls, so this shot has to do.

For years, baseball was played at old, 400-seat Beamer Park, but when the site was condemned in the late 1920s so Beamer School could be constructed, baseball was briefly in limbo.
Charles Clark, who was the president of the Sacramento Valley League, saw an opportunity, bought land off Beamer Street and worked with Motroni Construction to build a 1,400-seat, covered ballpark that became known as Clark Field.
Clark gained entry to the SVL with his club, known as the Woodland Oaks.
Opening day was April 27, 1930.
Wording on the scoreboard indicates that the field was established in 1930. There was no plaque to indicate this or when the stands were built, but I'm assuming that most of the existing structure is from the 30's.
At least I didn't notice any bases or baselines, not even a home plate, just a big dirt area. In fact when I first approached I couldn't figure out what sport the field could possibly be used for, maybe Cricket?

PARK FACTS: On September 20, 1920, city trustees approved purchase of Herman A. Dickel's 19 acre ranch at the southwest corner of Lemon and Sycamore Streets. A young Rudy Boysen was hired to supervise installation and maintenance of the park. He kept that position for more than 38 Years and developed the "Boysenberry" in his spare time. Each year between 1921 and 1929 a new garden or structure was added to the park. The Greek Theater, water garden, cactus garden, plunge and bathhouse (demolished), and baseball stadium (restored) were part of a building boom stopped only by the Depression. The present day park maintenance buildings were originally part of Boysen's greenhouse. He not only maintained the park grounds but grew all the flowers as well.
The Angels In Orderhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18266787671936519341noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6419399734234473808.post-1317439661371697812008-09-15T05:38:00.000-07:002008-09-16T19:17:38.141-07:00Dr. Pepper Youth Ballpark
WHERE: Arlington, Texas
WHERE EXACTLY: 1202 Nolan Ryan Expressway, just North of the Ballpark in Arlington
WHEN VISITED: September 2008, on my lunch break.

Dr. Pepper is HUGE in Texas.
